Lake Tapps Drawdown Season: Rent the Machine, Not the Hassle
The reservoir drops on November 1, which opens the winter window for dock, bulkhead, and shoreline work. Book a compact excavator and dump trailer online, then pick up or have it delivered.
The 2026–27 drawdown, in Cascade’s words
Cascade Water Alliance, which owns and operates the Lake Tapps Reservoir, announced on September 29, 2026 that it “will begin the active fall drawdown on November 1 and will bring the reservoir level down to approximately 538-539 feet elevation for the fall and winter.” Cascade says “the 2027 spring refill is anticipated to begin in mid-February,” with plans to raise the reservoir to about 543 feet in spring. (Typical summer level is 541.5 to 543 ft.)
Cascade also advises that new or modified bulkheads “should be built with the consideration that the reservoir level will be up to 543 feet,” and that this “is a good time to obtain the appropriate, required permits and a Cascade license prior to beginning any work.”

Permits first: a quick callout
Get your license and permits before the machine shows up. Cascade Water Alliance owns the lakebed and shoreline up to the 545-foot elevation line. Per Cascade, before any construction on Lake Tapps you must (1) get a license from Cascade, (2) get all necessary state and local permits, and (3) meet Cascade’s insurance requirements. That can include a shoreline exemption or permit from the City of Bonney Lake or Pierce County, a WDFW Hydraulic Project Approval, and sometimes U.S. Army Corps of Engineers authorization.
